Headache & Migraine Warrnambool
A headache with a pattern is a headache with a cause.
The Barefoot Osteo Warrnambool assesses recurring headaches and migraine by looking at what’s driving the pattern — neck, posture, breathing, load, and sleep — not just the pain itself.
If headaches have become part of your week, scroll down to see how we assess them, when to see a doctor first, and what happens when you book. Already know you want it looked at? Book your assessment now.

Sound familiar?
You’ve had the headache again. You’ve stopped questioning it.
Recurring headaches become background noise long before anyone assesses them — The Barefoot Osteo Warrnambool starts by taking the pattern seriously.
Not the dramatic kind. The other kind — the slow, familiar one that builds through the afternoon like a weather front rolling in off the Southern Ocean. You rub the back of your neck. You squint at the screen. You take something for it, and by morning it’s gone. Until Thursday.
That headache has a logic to it. It’s not random, it’s not bad luck, and it’s not “just stress.”
How it sneaks into the week
Somewhere along the way it stopped being a problem and became a feature. Just what your body does now. A tight neck here, a dull ache behind the eyes there — an uninvited guest who knows where you keep the spare key. Logic can be found. That’s the work.
How it shows up
Not all headaches are wired the same.
People searching for headache or migraine help in Warrnambool usually describe one of these patterns — The Barefoot Osteo assesses all of them.
- The dull, both-sides pressure that builds through the workday
- Headaches at the base of the skull or behind one eye, with a stiff neck
- Migraine — throbbing, one-sided, sometimes with nausea or light sensitivity
- Headaches that flare with screen time, driving, or long desk stretches
- Jaw clenching or grinding that’s joined the party
- Headaches two or three times a week that paracetamol manages but never explains
Different headaches. Different mechanisms. That’s why “take something and push through” keeps failing.
Why it keeps happening
For a lot of headaches, the neck is driving the whole thing.
At The Barefoot Osteo Warrnambool, headache assessment looks at neck load, posture, jaw tension, breathing patterns, and sleep — the conditions that keep the cycle spinning.

Most people treat what hurts.
We find out why it keeps happening.
What eight hours a day at a screen does to your neck
Think about what your head does for eight hours a day. It sits slightly forward of your shoulders — screen, steering wheel, phone — while the muscles and joints at the top of your neck absorb that load, hour after hour. Add a clenched jaw. Add shallow chest breathing that recruits the neck muscles for a job the diaphragm should be doing.
After months or years of that low-grade overload, those structures start referring pain upward. Into the head. The headache tells part of the story. The neck tells the rest.
That’s not true of every headache — migraine has its own machinery, and triggers are stubbornly individual. But it’s true often enough that assessing the neck, posture, and breathing should be standard practice.

How we assess
First we work out what kind of headache it actually is.
Headache assessment at The Barefoot Osteo Warrnambool includes case history, neck and posture assessment, and screening for the headaches that need medical care first.
1
Your story
When they hit, where they sit, how your sleep behaves, what’s already been tried.
2
Your whole chain
How your neck moves, what your jaw and breathing are contributing, how your upper back carries the day.
3
Screening for red flags
We screen for the presentations that belong with a doctor, not on a treatment table.
Then we explain what we found — including which type of headache the picture points toward. Full method on the How We Work page.

What care may include
Working with the neck.
And the conditions around it.
Care may include hands-on treatment for the neck and upper back, breathing retraining, and practical load and sleep strategies.
For migraine, care works with the neck and contributing pattern alongside your GP’s management — not instead of it.

What treatment can include
Gentle hands-on treatment through the upper neck, jaw, and upper back — research supports manual therapy for certain headache types — alongside exercises that rebuild deep neck endurance and shoulder blade control. Not cracking. Not forcing.
It usually also includes breathing retraining, screen and desk habits, and sleep — probably the one you’re least willing to change. We’ll say it anyway.
What we’re actually after
The win is Thursday arriving without the headache.
The aim of headache care here is understanding your pattern well enough that it stops running your week.
- afternoons
- screens
- sleep
- Thursdays
Your headache isn’t the problem. It’s the message.
Learn to read it, and you won’t need to keep silencing it.
Starting point
Fewer headaches
A quieter week is a useful starting point.
The real win
Understanding the pattern
The type, the triggers, the early warnings — so you stop being ambushed by it.
The destination
Less monitoring.
More attention for your day. Less spent checking whether a headache is on its way.
When to see a doctor first
Some headaches need medical assessment.
No exceptions.
Seek urgent medical care if your headache involves:
- A sudden, severe “thunderclap” headache — worst of your life, peaking in seconds or minutes
- Headache with fever, neck stiffness, rash, or confusion
- Headache after a head injury
- New weakness, numbness, slurred speech, or visual loss
- A new or changing pattern over 50, or with a history of cancer
- Headaches that wake you from sleep or worsen lying down, with nausea
These are not assess-it-next-week situations. Doctor or emergency first — every time.

Quick questions
The things people ask before they book.
Can osteopathy help with headaches?
Osteopathic care may help with certain headache types — particularly tension-type and neck-related (cervicogenic) patterns. Assessment determines whether yours fits.
Can osteopathy help with migraine?
Migraine is a neurological condition, and medical management sits with your GP. Where the neck and surrounding pattern are contributing, osteopathic care may help alongside that management.
How do I know what type of headache I have?
That’s what the assessment works out. Tension-type, migraine, and neck-driven headaches feel different, behave differently, and respond to different things.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can book directly. If you have a Chronic Condition Management Plan from your GP, bring the paperwork.
Will I be treated at the first appointment?
In most cases, yes — assessment and screening first, then treatment where clinically appropriate.
How many appointments will I need?
It depends on your pattern and how it responds. Within the first few appointments we want to see the pattern shifting. If it isn’t, we change the plan or refer on.
When should I see a doctor instead?
Sudden severe headache, headache with fever or neck stiffness, after head injury, with new neurological symptoms, or a new pattern over 50 — doctor or emergency first, always.
